"I'm not afraid of storms, for I'm learning how to sail my ship"
Louisa May Alcott

Since most companies hire their managers from within, organizations must commit to developing the talent and skills of these managers in order for them to be successful. Companies that actively groom their next generation of leaders tend to view management training as an essential component of their on-going successful business operations. Conversely, companies that do not achieve exceptional results tend to view management training as a luxury. Can your organization afford the luxury of not investing in your future?
Step 1's professional education curriculum, Step1Start, is designed to help emerging and experienced managers alike to more effectively perform on the job, providing them the tools necessary to execute their responsibilities with confidence and control.

Essential Supervisory Skills - The Essential Supervisory Skills program is an intensive, focused two day course that teaches frontline supervisors and team leaders what they need to know to significantly improve their management performance. The program encapsulates four critical management areas that frontline supervisors and team leaders need to learn to become more effective managers:

  • Manager Building Blocks—this session introduces the student to several fundamental concepts of management, including a discussion of control versus influence and a primer and exercise in identifying the core competencies of employees.
  • Who’s the Boss?—this session explores the essential management behaviors of being truly accountable in the workplace and the challenges associated with becoming the leader of your former peers.
  • Getting It Done—this session focuses on the day-to-day aspects of being an accountable manager, including how to successfully delegate, how to use a structured approach to decision-making and how to motivate your team to perform at (or beyond!) their full potential.
  • Staying Out of Trouble—this session examines the intricacies and do’s and don’ts of the employment lifecycle (from hiring to firing) as well as issues related to workplace compliance and typical mistakes made by managers that lead to actual violations of employment laws.

This program is delivered in our Training Center or it can be delivered at the client's worksite.

Practical Management Methods - Designed for department-level managers, this comprehensive 12 module training program can be delivered in our training center or at the client's site and is scheduled to be “work friendly”.  Participants are provided comprehensive training that focuses on the practical fundamentals of management (instead of theory), including:

  • Fundamental Concepts
  • Core Competencies
  • Leading Your Former Peers
  • Management Accountability
  • Delegation
  • Decision Making Methods
  • Understanding Financial Statements
  • Putting Financial Data to Work
  • Motivating Your People
  • Management Presentation Skills
  • The Employment Lifecycle – Hiring to Firing
  • Workplace Compliance & Violations

Upon completing the course, participants will be able to recognize and handle management problems early, before they become complicated and expensive.

Master Classes - We're bringing two professional education "Master Classes" to market in 2010 in conjunction with with our strategic part, labor attorney Kim Kisner, Principal of Kisner Law Firm.  These full-day programs are expanded versions of two of our existing, highly successful training modules.

The Employment Lifecycle
From interviewing to separation (and everything in between), this workshop examines the full lifecycle of an employee's relationship with an employer.  It addresses prominent Do's & Don'ts in the areas of:

  • Interviewing
  • Performance
  • Discipline
  • Separation

Workplace Compliance
Legal issues related to labor law are distracting, expensive and generally bad for morale.  In this workshop, you'll learn how to stay out of trouble in the areas of:

  • Sexual Harassment
  • Discrimination
  • Wage & Hour Law
  • Workplace Safety

Both Master Classes include an "Ask the Expert" session at the close of the class where attendees will be able to ask questions directly of employment law attorney Kim Kisner.

Active Mentoring - Because no classroom can anticipate all of the potential problems a manager will deal with, Step 1 can also provide each participant ongoing, personalized active mentoring to guide them through the challenges they will face every day. With unlimited telephone access and regularly scheduled face-to-face sessions, these key managers will have an objective resource that they know and trust to turn to for suggestions and advice.

The Result: Competent, Confident Managers
